We'd like to be unhappy but we never do have the time

Chefs are not as happy as they were a year ago - it's official. Training group City and Guilds reckons chefs have fallen from fifth place last year to rank 20th out of 28 in a list of happy professions.

Asked to grade their level of glee on a scale of nought to 10, chefs came back with an average of 7.9. The report, which interviewed 1,301 people, found that beauticians were the chirpiest - with an average rating of 9.2.

But when asked about work/life balance, chefs came third out of 28. Eric Chavot, head chef at the Capital restaurant in London, was doubtful. "Ask my ex-wife about my work-life balance," he said.
