Legendary art works from Langan's Brasserie and Odin's restaurants could fetch more than £1m

An auction of 230 artworks from Langan's Brasserie and Odin's restaurants in London are expected to sell for more than £1m.

The paintings, including celebrated works by David Hockney, Patrick Procktor, RB Kitaj and Lawrence Toynbee, were originally collected by the late Peter Langan, who founded the restaurants in partnership with the actor Michael Caine in 1976. A year later, Richard Shepherd - who recently sold his share in Langan's Resturants - joined the partnership.

Shepherd, who is now chairman of the company, said: "I was very lucky that I learned a lot from Peter Langan and over the years acquired with him many of the paintings that are being offered. They are sure to be familiar to many; conjuring wonderful memories and providing unique opportunities."

" People do not need to worry, Langan's will continue the tradition of surrounding diners with a wide array of art, retaining our signature atmosphere of creativity and comfort. We also hope that the young artists of today will continue the tradition at Langan's of ‘eating down' their work."

The paintings are to be sold in two auctions, with 10 being available during the Modern British Art Evening Sale at Christie's London on 12 December, when the classic, large Portrait of Peter Langan in Los Angeles by Hockney is expected to go for between £100,000 and £150,000.

A dedicated sale Peter Langan: A Life with Art will be auctioned on 18 December, at Christie's South Kensington.

William Porter, senior director, 20th century British & Irish Art, Christie's London, said that Langan's passion for collecting pictures and relationship with great contemporary artists duirn the 1970s and 1980s is notable. "Anyone who met Peter Langan has an extraordinary tale to tell and the more you hear the harder it is to differentiate the man from the legend."
