Twelve independently-owned hospitality businesses have been recognised as the best in their class at the Les Routiers Awards for 2008.

The guide, publicised today, handed out two awards per category covering hotels, bed and breakfasts (B&B), inns, pubs, cafés and restaurants.

The Royal Oak Hotel in Conwy, Wales, and the George Hotel in Newent, Gloucestershire, won the hotel of the year awards for their commitment to excellence in service.

The Copper Horse in Scarborough and The Orange Tree in Torquay were named the winners in the restaurant of the year category and were both praised for their use of seasonal, local produce.

The pub of the year awards went to the Old Queen’s Head in Penn, Buckinghamshire, and the Countryman Inn in Shipley, West Sussex, while the inn of the year awards were given to the Beaufort Arms in Raglan, Monmouthshire, and the Tempest Arms in Skipton, North Yorkshire

Winners in the B&B of the year category were the Adria Hotel in London and the Old Nibley Farmhouse in Blakeney, Gloucestershire, with the Sedbergh Café in Cumbria and The Kitchen in Licolshire being awarded the café of the year awards.

In 2006, the Les Routiers guide collapsed into liquidation but was rescued by a former partner who stepped in to resurrect the business.

Purchasing consortium IPA, which used to offer Les Routiers members a bulk-buying service, stumped up the cash for the guide’s 2007 edition.
