Career to date...
Courtney joined Calcot Manor in 1999 while studying for his NVQ, working with the front of house team as a receptionist. He was promoted to assistant manager of the hotel's Gumstool Inn and later became manager. In 2004, he was promoted to the role of assistant general manager of the hotel, and has recently started a secondment as spa operations manager to assist in the growth of this recent development for the Manor.
Why is he a winner?
Courtney has good social skills combined with a sharp mind for learning and adopting systems. He managed the 80-seat Gumstool Inn, which, under his control, served an average of 125 covers per day in 2003, growing the business by 20%.
While his management skills have helped to strengthen a young and enthusiastic team, he has also made significant improvements to the profitability of the hotel by managing all purchasing and cost control projects.
He has developed strong links with local schools and colleges as assistant general manager, and is heavily involved in mentoring new and junior staff within the business. He promotes NVQ and HCIMA courses to encourage staff to progress themselves.
