The Conservative Party has joined the chorus of disapproval at VisitBritain’s move to cut up to 55 jobs as part of a restructuring initiative.
The Liberal Democrats described last week’s move as "disastrous" while industry bodies such as the Tourism Alliance and UKinbound also attacked the decision.
Anne Milton, shadow tourism minister, today said: "Job cuts from an organisation that is there to promote Britain just about sums up the Government's attitude to tourism.
"With the tourism deficit having risen from £4b to a record £18b under Labour, this news will cause fresh concern across the British tourist industry.
"During this crucial run-up to the 2012 Olympics we need clear leadership and a strong vision for tourism in the UK," she added.
