Blackiston set to 'do a Jamie' for Norfolk

Monday 12 September 2005 11:05

Michelin-starred chef Galton Blackiston is supporting a bid to improve school dinners in Norfolk. The chef-patron of Morston Hall, near Blakeney, has vowed to do for Norfolk what Jamie Oliver has done for Greenwich schools.

Blackiston will work with Norfolk County Services to develop new menus and run school workshops to educate children about where food comes from and eating healthily.

"I have two boys at primary school and want to get little ones eating something decent, nutritional and learning a healthier way of eating," he said. "It's important to get them while they're still impressionable - the workshops will show children how to make proper fish fingers, biscuits and bread."

A spokeswoman for Norfolk County Services, which will receive an extra 429,453 from the Government for school meals this year, said the county already spent above the national average. "The extra money is not enough to improve everything," she said. "Galton will help with recipes and workshops."
