Vegetarian Society Awards
Rainbow Café in Cambridge and Bristol's Café Maitreya have jointly won the Best Vegetarian Bistro and Café category in this year's Vegetarian Society Awards held on board the Cutty Sark in London. Marble Brewery in Manchester won the Best Provision for Vegetarians in a pub or pub chain in the society's fifth awards.

Fuller's flying high
Mark Fuller's catering company, Flying Fish Special Events, has won the backstage catering contract for the Hall of Fame Awards, to be held at London's Alexandra Palace on 16 November. Fuller said he was thrilled to be feeding celebrities again following his contract at the Live 8 concert in the summer. Flying Fish also recently won the in-house catering contract at Sanctuary Records.

Terry heads Ignite restaurants
Ignite Group, owner of London restaurant Cocoon, has appointed former Caprice Holdings manager Keiran Terry as head of restaurant operations. South Africa-born Terry has been living in London since 1998 and was general manager of Caprice Holding's Daphne's restaurant. Ignite Group managing director Matthew Hermer said: "We look forward to seeing how Keiran's knowledge and experience enhances Cocoon and assists us with the growth of the restaurant side of our business."

Councils ignorant of new rules
New regulations to control the disposal of used cooking oils are not being enforced by local authorities, according to a survey by catering equipment manufacturer Aga Foodservice. The group found that only four out of 27 borough, city and district councils questioned had a clear understanding of the rules that came into effect in October 2004. Three councils said they had never heard of the regulations, which require caterers to pay authorised collectors to take away used oils, and six others admitted they were doing nothing to enforce them.
