Punchinello's

The oldest restaurant in Nottingham, which has been operating for nearly 120 years, has closed.

Punchinello's, which was founded in 1890, has been forced to shut after its owner Jim Anderson’s company Le Mistral went into voluntary liquidation.

Punchinello's closed on 23 December, with 15 members of staff having lost their jobs.

Anderson, who owned the restaurant for just one year, said sales had “fallen off the scales” in recent months.

“It's a victim of the high rents in that area – it's very sad,” he told local news service This is Nottingham.

“The middle class that frequent Punchinello's are not coming into the town. Most of the similar restaurants are in cheaper locations – we are right in the high street. The restaurant is now closed.”

Liquidation firm EWS is to be appointed on Monday.
