A London council has used emergency powers to close a restaurant after a customer spotted a rat scurrying around the premises.

Camden Council health inspectors found that the Lords Indian restaurant in Whitfield Street was severely infested with rats and posed a “serious risk” to public health. Large amounts of rat droppings were found in the eating area and the kitchen, according to the council.

The restaurant was immediately closed after the council obtained an Emergency Prohibition Order at the Highbury Corner Magistrates Court. The restaurant was ordered to pay costs of £500.

The business remains closed and the owner is being prosecuted for food hygiene offences.

Councillor Chris Knight, Executive Member for Environment, Camden Council, said:

"The Council always tries to work with food businesses to improve hygiene standards. However, when public health is put at risk we will not hesitate to take immediate enforcement action to protect residents and visitors to the borough."
