Recruitment remains the biggest headache facing hospitality businesses, with the hotel sector suffering most acutely, according to new research.

A survey of more than 2,000 hotels, bars, restaurants, pubs and clubs, by purchasing consortium Beacon, found more than three quarters (78%) were experiencing difficulties filling vacant positions.

More than eight in 10 (82%) hotels reported problems compared with 76% of bars, restaurants and clubs and 74% of other leisure operators such as golf clubs and leisure centres.

More than a third of those surveyed (39%) felt a lack of appropriate skills due to the staff shortage was affecting the performance of their businesses.

The research comes in the week People 1st revealed its National Skills Strategy for England, which it hopes will enable employers to tackle the skills crisis.

John Vinuesa, director of Beacon, said: The industry needs to do more to promote the sector to ensure businesses attract and retain high-quality recruits.”
