Sunday Times Best Companies To Work For 2009

Hotel group Marriott, Revolution owner Inventive Leisure and Bourne Leisure, the hotel and holiday park operator, have all been named as ‘Best Companies to Work For’ by the Sunday Times.

The annual list, published yesterday, saw Bourne Leisure and Marriott named in the Best 20 Large Companies to Work For list – at two and four respectively – while Inventive made it in to the main list, at 49.

In its report on Inventive Leisure, the Sunday Times revealed that employees have more fun with their colleagues than at all but one other company on the list, winning it an impressive 90% positive score in the staff survey conducted for the list.

When it comes to good working relationships with colleagues, Inventive Leisure ranked ninth overall. Staff said they get a buzz out of working with people in their team (76%) and said people go out of their way to help each other (77%).

Bourne Leisure leapt 13 places up the list this year, winning a special award for most improved big company.

The company behind Haven Holidays, Butlins and Warner Leisure Hotels, won 16 top scores in the newspaper’s employee questionnaire and ranked first overall on questions about managers, colleagues and wellbeing.

Marriott rose 10 places this year thanks to its five-star treatment of staff. Employees awarded the business the highest positive score in the survey — 76% — for loving their work here.

It may not be the biggest payer (three-quarters of workers get a basic salary of £15,000 or less) but staff said they have fun (83%), think the job is good for their personal growth (77%) and are happy with the balance between work and home life (66%).

Last week, Lexington Catering was named as one of the Best Small Companies to Work For.

Using foraged ingredients is nothing new but the trend has become more mainstream over the past two years. However, the wider use of foraged food in restaurants also carries a certain amount of danger.
