Michelin-starred Indian restaurant Tamarind to launch sister site in California

The owners of London's Michelin-starred Indian restaurant Tamarind are to expand to the USA with the launch of a second site in California this summer.

Chief executive Rajesh Suri and executive chef Alfred Prasad will open the sister restaurant, called Tamarind of London, at the Crystal Cove Promenade in Newport Beach, a luxury shopping and dining destination overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

Tamarind of London will be a 144-seat restaurant offering a similar menu to the original in Mayfair, with dishes showcasing the traditional Moghul cuisine of North West India.

Open for lunch and dinner, the restaurant will include a main dining room, bar and patio, with interiors combining traditional Indian features with the modern style of the Crystal Cove Promenade.

Prasad said that opening a sister to Tamarind in the USA was a real career high. "It's going to be very challenging and exciting replicating our signature dishes in a totally different country and I am relishing the opportunity to introduce our brand of Indian cuisine to a whole new clientele and to work with some exciting new products and suppliers," he said.

Suri added: "We've had a number of offers over the years but none has been as attractive as that of Crystal Cove Promenade in Newport Beach. It goes without saying that the location is wonderful but we were also very impressed by the locals' openness to new concepts and dishes."

Tamarind is one of just five Indian restaurants in the UK to hold a coveted Michelin star. The restaurant lost its star after eight years in 2009 but regained it the following year.
