Recession prompts 75% of British families to eat at home

Fewer British families plan to eat out over the coming 12 months

Three-quarters of British families will stay at home during the recession rather than eat out at restaurants or drink in the pub, research has found.

A survey by market analyst Buckingham Research, which questioned almost 600 consumers across the UK, found that 75% of families with children will be less likely to eat or drink out over the next 12 months.

Almost three-quarters of families said they would now opt for home-cooked meals over takeouts, while nearly two-thirds said they would cut back on their holiday and travel expenditure.

Couples and single people are also less likely to go out over the coming year, with a respective 57% and 54% intending to stay home rather than dine out (or order takeaway in).

Nearly a third of couples and a fifth of singles also said they would opt to drink at home over going to the pub during the next twelve months.

Lucy Pedrick, research director at Buckingham Research, said: “In these tight times, we see more families cutting back on costs than other segments of the population.

“The recession is making us more likely to shop around for a good deal so the emphasis needs to be on value for money or consumers are likely to seek out offers elsewhere.”
