Leeds councillors scupper plan for 14-storey Hilton hotel

Caterer NewsPlans for a 14-storey budget Hilton hotel in Leeds have been rejected by local councillors.

Developers had hoped to build the 150-bedroom hotel, which would have included offices and basement car parking, in the Hunslet area of the city, reports the Guardian.

Tom Cook, from developer Cubic Acquisitions, told a planning meeting that granting approval would lead to a £20m investment in the area, creating new jobs, adding that the hotel would complement existing hotels in the city.

“The financial viability of Clarence Dock is under threat,” he said. “Having a hotel would increase footfall and is supported by businesses there.”

However, planning officers said that the development was inappropriate for the area and councillors voted unanimously to refuse the application. They highlighted problems with evening access by public transport and suggested that the proposal would have an impact on city centre hotels.

Concerns were also expressed that the proposed building was too tall and would impact on Hunslet and Victoria Mills.
