Pharmacy fittings sell for £11m

Fixtures from the former Pharmacy restaurant in London's Notting Hill have sold at auction for more than double their pre-sale estimate.

Nearly £11.1m was raised at Sotheby's auction house on Monday night as the fittings, designed by artist Damien Hirst, went under the hammer.

Hirst was co-owner of Pharmacy when it opened in January 1998. He designed everything in the restaurant – from its butterfly paintings to aspirin-shaped bar stools.

Pharmacy closed in September last year after falling out of fashion.

In a sale that attracted more than 500 people, the highest total of the night was forked out for a medicine cabinet, which an anonymous buyer took home for nearly £1.24m.

Other works that exceeded expectations included a set of six ashtrays, which were bought for £1,600 (estimate £100-£150), a neon sign, which went for nearly twenty times the guide price at £66,000, and a pair of salt and pepper shakers, which fetched £1,600 (estimate £100-£150).
