So here we go again with another wheeze. How can any additional tax on business actually help it prosper?
We all know that taxes have to be paid so the Government can, with any luck, provide us with a well managed range of services, which we, depending upon our own circumstances and expertise, are unable to provide for ourselves.
It's how the taxes are raised that's most important. Any that are regressive or have a targeted negative effect - which a bed tax most certainly does - should be rejected without further consideration.
We can assume we will soon be told that this tax can be absorbed somehow, which in turn will make us more competitive compared with other worldwide destinations.
I can't wait to see the selective list of examples. Hotel bills already include 17.5% VAT, and something like 2% card commission.
So what's another 5%? Probably 5% too much.
