Conran’s Lutyens a success but lacks surprise, say critics

Sir Terence Conran’s latest restaurant venture, Lutyens, is another success for the veteran restaurateur but lacks any element of surprise, say London food critics.

The Evening Standard’s Fay Maschler says the food at the restaurant on Fleet Street is competent but prosaic.

“Formulaic was a thought that crept in and refused to go away, but I suppose a venerable man should be allowed to have around him what he likes,” she says.

Time Out’s food critic Guy Dimond echoes Maschler’s point: “What Lutyens lacks though is the surprise factor. If you’ve been to other Conran establishments, Lutyens will feel immediately familiar; it’s a formula restaurant.”

The Metro’s Marina O’Loughlin meanwhile wonders what planet the team behind the new flagship Planet Hollywood site is on, giving the restaurant on Leicester Square just one out of five stars.
