Wahaca unveils details of new Charlotte Street restaurant
Mexican street food group Wahaca has unveiled details of its forthcoming restaurant on Charlotte Street in London, which is set to open on 1 September.
The group's eighth restaurant will be housed in the site formerly occupied by Bertorelli, which was first acquired by the Marlon Abela Restaurant Corporation but then sold on to Wahaca earlier this year.
The new restaurant will feature the UK's first dedicated Mezcal bar as well as a deli and a takeaway shop offering Wahaca's first Mexican breakfast menu.
Housed in three converted Victorian townhouses, the restaurant will be spread over two floors, featuring a 130-seat main dining room on the ground floor and the Mezcal cocktail bar on the first.
The tortaria market shop will sell Mexican ingredients and offer a selection of dishes to take away, including salads, burritos, tacos and torta sandwiches. Called Wahacito, it will be open from 8am serving a full Mexican breakfast menu including breakfast burritos, sourdough toasted sandwiches, pastries and doughnuts as well as smoothies, including a signature avocado-agave smoothie.
The Charlotte Street restaurant is the second opening for Wahaca this year, which earlier this summer opened an 18-month temporary restaurant on the South Bank. Located on the terrace of the Queen Elizabeth Hall, the restaurant is built from eight recycled shipping containers, arranged in a two-storey overhanging structure, allowing space for 130 diners, a bar, terrace and outdoor seating.
Run by Thomasina Miers and Mark Selby, Wahaca's first restaurant opened in Covent Garden in 2007 and was followed by sites at Westfield London (2008), Canary Wharf (2009), Soho (2010), Westfield Stratford and Bluewater (2011).
