The Crane Hotel in Barbados, the region's oldest continuously operating hotel, is being officially relaunched after a period of expansion.

The hotel, in St Philip on the island's south-east coast, has added two new all-suite self-catering units, bringing the resort's former 18 rooms to a total of 70. A third new block, housing 30 units, is set to be completed in early 2004. There will also be a new restaurant called Zen, featuring a mixture of Thai and Japanese cuisine.

Hamish Watson, who spent 15 years as general manager of Cobbler's Cove on the island's west coast, has been appointed general manager. The Crane was first established as a hotel in 1887.
