Chef Neil Borthwick (left) and waiter Joseph Durrant have been named Young Chef and Young Waiter respectively for 2006.

Borthwick, from the Connaught hotel in London, and Durrant, from Atrium restaurant in Edinburgh, both receive £2,000 and a week-long study trip to Barbados.

The awards were announced at the House of Commons on Tuesday night, after a cook-and-serve competition held at London’s Westminster Kingsway College during the day.

The competition, now in its 22nd year, is organised by the Restaurant Association and Springboard in partnership with American Express and the Savoy Educational Trust.

It is open to professional chefs and waiters aged 25 and under.
