Next move... for someone wanting to improve their interview technique

Thursday 03 November 2005 00:00

Despite my best efforts I go to pieces at interviews. How can I improve my technique?

The Answer
Interviews are always daunting, but take heart: giving your best possible performance comes down to planning and practice. It's essential to do your research on the company, so you come across as well-prepared.

Think hard about why you feel suited to the position. Look at your greatest skills, achievements and strengths and focus on these. Of course, you may be asked questions about your weaknesses, so prepare possible answers. Be open about areas of development, but always end this discussion on a positive note, perhaps an example of previous achievements or improvements you've made.

Don't overlook the importance of presentation. If you're well-groomed and smart you'll make an immediate positive impression. You'll also feel more confident in yourself.

Don't worry if your first interviews don't go as planned. Accept that you may have to make several interview attempts. Like anything, practice makes perfect. You could even practise your technique on a friend or colleague. Be yourself, and if you're also well-rehearsed and well-researched, you stand a good chance of success.
