Children's meals account for a significant proportion of the family market - for example, 2.5% of the 1.1 billion meals served in pubs are for children.

To help caterers tap into the market, Brakes has reformulated its five top-selling meals to create nutritionally-balanced meals for three- to 10-year-olds which have passed the taste test in trials and contain around 25% of the industry-agreed GDA (Guideline Daily Amount) for calories, sugars, fat, saturates and salt.

The individually pouched, frozen ready meals include Chicken Curry - in a mild, fruity sauce containing hidden sweet apples - and Creamy Fish Pie in 200g portions, plus Macaroni Cheese, Spaghetti Bolognaise and Meatballs & Pasta in 250g portions.

Complementary lines such as Bunnies in a Buttercup Meadow - a mix of peas, sweetcorn and rabbit-shaped carrot slices - aim to help encourage kids to eat their vegetables.
