Compass's Grasslands restaurant at Edinburgh Zoo wins design award
Compass Group's Grasslands restaurant at Edinburgh Zoo, created in collaboration with Scottish design agency 442 Design, has won the Roses Interior Design award.
The caterer's second food offer at the zoo, the Jungle Food Court, also had a spot in the final three of the competition, going up against the ASICS Amsterdam flagship store for the interior design accolade.
The awards celebrate innovation and excellence in design and are judged by experts in the design industry.
Compass won the 10-year catering deal worth £26m at Edinburgh Zoo in April, after which it carried out an extensive programme to refurbish and rebrand the dining destinations.
Grasslands restaurant takes inspiration from one of the main animal habitats represented at the zoo. It has a base of neutral colours that is inspired by the sunsets and sun-bleached landscapes of the African grasslands, with strong graphics of zebras, ants and an anteater, which link to the animals residing close by in the zoo.
Three dimensional model insects throughout the interior aim to add a sense of character and animation to the design.
Roy Westwood, creative manager for sport, leisure and hospitality at Compass Group UK & Ireland, said: "To have both Grasslands and the Jungle Food Court sought out for nominations is testament to our design innovation and a brilliant opportunity to showcase the creative work we're doing.
"We've created a real flagship in Edinburgh and are so proud that it competes with some of the best eateries on the high street."
