It's said that money can't buy you love, but for those prone to ridiculous fiscal displays of affection, Valentine's means more than just a padded card and Elizabeth Duke's finest.
Topping the lavish love chart this Valentine's Day was to be a £100,000 fairytale courtesy of London's Oxo Tower and Harvey Nicks. Not only was the entire eighth floor of the restaurant up for grabs, but a limo, a trip to Paris, and attractive his-and-hers heart-shaped rubies were included in the price. The extravaganza was pulled, however, after regular customers complained that their Valentine's needs were being usurped.
If that's a disappointment, there's always the slightly less expensive "A Night of Romance" at the Landmark hotel. You and your beau can make Champagne-fuelled whoopee in the Presidential Suite for £3,700. The package also includes silk sheets, 100 red roses and a 1996 Taittinger. Original. Call 020 7631 8000 to book.
If, however, spending a small fortune on Valentine's Day doesn't quite float your (love) boat, but you still want to indulge in a little Tuesday night entertainment, at least try to do something a little less clichéd. Here are a couple of ideas to get your imagination going:
- Whisper sweet nothings and serenade your beau at cool karaoke bar Lucky Voice in London's Soho (020 7439 3660).
- Stay in but avoid cooking by ordering a three-course meal (from £37.50 per person) or a romantic Fireside Hamper (£49.50) from London restaurant Villandry. Call 020 7631 3131.
But for those who really can't bear to be near a glass of sparkling rosé or a heart-shaped foodstuff, fear not, several London venues have decided to mount the anti-Valentine's bandwagon: the Sheraton Belgravia hotel is offering an anti-Valentine's package of canapés, cocktails and piano music for £20 (020 7201 1941); while restaurant Pied à Terre is encouraging tables of three or more on 14 February.
