Budget hotel chain Ibis is claiming to be the first hotel company to launch a pay-what-you-want scheme to mark the opening of its Singapore premises this month.

The promotion, which can be accessed at www.Paywhatyouwant.com.sg , allows customers to make a reservation and pay whatever price they want (although for a limited time each day).

The Ibis hotel’s official rack-rate will be S$138 (£62) per room at all other times.

Puneet Dhawan, general manager of the hotel, said: "We have allocated enough rooms each day for members of this website. All you have to do is check the clock on the homepage and make your bid at the right time."

Although the Ibis Singapore is promoting the scheme as a first, PriceYour Meal.com has allowed diners in Edinburgh to do the same since January 2007.

Ibis is part of the Accor Group, which has nearly 90,000 rooms and 800 hotels in 40 countries.

Using foraged ingredients is nothing new but the trend has become more mainstream over the past two years. However, the wider use of foraged food in restaurants also carries a certain amount of danger.
