JW Marriott Marquis Dubai

The 1,606-bedroom JW Marriott Marquis Dubai, which opens later this year, is laying claim to being the tallest dedicated hotel building in the world.

At 355m, it will overtake the 333m Rose Rayhaan by Rotana in Dubai. However, neither hotel is as high as the Ritz-Carlton, which is located on floors 102-118 of the International Commerce Centre in Hong Kong, with an alfresco rooftop bar at 490m.

None of these hotels, though, will match up to the Kingdom Tower in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, which will accommodate a Four Seasons hotel when it opens in 2016. At over 1,000m tall, the tower will be at least 173m higher than the world's current tallest building, Dubai's 828m Bur Khalifa, home to the Armani hotel.

The JW Marriott Marquis Dubai will have nine restaurants - including Atul Kochhar's Rang Mahal Indian restaurant, five lounges, two ballrooms, 24 meeting rooms and 5,100sq m of event space. There will also be a 1,500sq m spa with a 32m swimming pool.

Currently there are 53 JW Marriott hotels - the luxury brand from Marriott International - across 22 countries. By 2015, this number is expected to increase to 80 properties in 29 countries.
