HRH the Prince of Wales today paid a visit to Westminster Kingsway College to hear about its commitment to helping disadvantaged young people through the Prince’s Trust.

The college is delivering the youth charity’s 12-week personal development programme, which encourages 13 unemployed young people to build the skills, confidence and motivation to work.

The Prince of Wales met the five young women and eight young men involved in the programme, which is currently being run from the college’s King’s Cross centre.

This year the college will also deliver a new ‘Get Into Cooking’ course designed to encourage young people to take up careers in the catering industry. The intensive short course enables participants aged 16-25 to gain a nationally recognised qualification in professional cookery and hands-on experience in a working kitchen.

The Prince of Wales, who unveiled a commemorative plaque to mark the visit, made a short speech to an invited audience from the hospitality industry. He said he was “hugely encouraged by the programme” and added that he hope it would make a difference to the young people involved.

The Royal visit included a tour of the specialist teaching kitchens where he met catering and hospitality students who presented him with a baked tribute of bread in the shape of The Prince of Wales’s feathers. In particular, the Prince of Wales was very pleased to see the college’s emphasis on teaching butchery skills.

Andy Wilson, principal, said Westminster Kingsway College is pleased to be working with the Prince’s Trust, to develop new programmes to provide new opportunities for disadvantaged young people in London.
