Marriott International to double portfolio
Marriott International plans to double its portfolio of hotels in Europe by 2015.
The company currently has 174 hotels with 40,000 rooms throughout the continent, and expects this to increase to 80,000 rooms over the next five years.
Seven of Marriott's 18 brands are currently represented in Europe: Ritz-Carlton, Bvlgari, JW Marriott, Marriott Hotels & Resorts, Renaissance Hotels, Courtyard by Marriott and Marriott Executive Apartments. An eighth brand, Residence Inn, an extended stay operation, will open in Munich in 2012.
There are currently another 30 new hotels in development in Europe, including the Reanaissance Moscow Monarch Center Hotel, the Courtyard by Marriott Budapest and the JW Marriott Hotel Ankara, all which are due to open later this year.
"Europe is the largest lodging marketing in the world and holds enormous potential for Marriott," said Amy McPherson, president and managing director of Marriott International Europe, speaking at the International Hotel Investment Forum in Berlin.
"Our talented new team here is aggressively accelerating our focus on growth.
"With a footing in most of Europe's gateway cities, we are thrilled to see our expansion continue into secondary cities and emerging markets. We are confident we are well-positioned to achieve this ambitious expansion goal."
