Hotels in Moscow proved the most profitable during December 2007 of the 10 European cities listed in the monthly Europe HotStats survey from TRI Hospitality.

The Russian capital achieved an income before fixed charges per available room (IBFCpar) of €125.62 which, although being 2% down on December 2006, put it at the top of the table.

This figure stemmed from a 26.1% increase in average room rate to €198.65 (the highest in the survey) as the city’s occupancy average – of  60.54% - was the fourth from the bottom.

Although wage costs as a percentage of turnover rose by 7.8% from €18.74 to €26.54 in Moscow, this was still the third lowest in the survey after London’s €26.25 and Prague’s €26.28

London was the second most profitable city for hoteliers in December, with an IBFCpar of €108.97, followed by Vienna (at €80.14), which achieved the highest occupancy during the month of 83.02%. London had the third highest occupancy rate, with Paris in second position.

Revenue per available room (revpar) was highest in Paris, London and Vienna while the steepest average room rates, after Moscow, were to be found in Paris (€198.26) and London (€197.62).

The most spectacular growth in profitability came from Budapest’s hotels, where IBFCpar soared by 309.1%. However, this freakish result stemmed from the fact that some of the hotels in the survey were closed for refurbishment in the same month of 2006 and the December 2007 profit-per-room figure of €16.61 was the lowest in the survey.

The figures are compiled each month by Tri Hospitality Consulting.
