Michelin-starred chef Martin Blunos has created the world's most expensive cheese sandwich, available for an eye-watering - and hopefully mouth-watering - £110.

Blunos, the executive chef at Hurst House on the Marsh in West Wales, has constructed the indulgent hand-held snack using Cheddar cheese blended with white truffles and 100-year-old balsamic vinegar - and sprinkled it with gold dust, according to the Daily Mail.

The luxury dish, which made its appearance at the Frome Cheese Show in Somerset where the celebrity chef is judging a sandwich making competition, is made using a £5 loaf of sourdough dressed with extra virgin olive oil and then layered cheese, slices of quails' egg, heirloom black tomato, epicure apple, and fresh figs.

Mustard red frills, pea shoots and red amaranth is added as salad and the whole thing is topped with a coating of edible gold dust.

Blunos, who worked with West Country cheese-maker Pilgrim's Choice to create the white-truffle blend, said: "We Brits are known to love our cheese sandwiches, and here's one that not only comes with a royal price tag but is fit for the banqueting table.

"In fact, washed down with a bottle of Krug, what more could you want?" he added.

There is no official record yet but an application has been made to the Guinness Book of World Records to have the sandwich recognised as the most expensive to make.

The standing record for the most expensive commercially available sandwich is the von Essen Platinum Club Sandwich, at the Cliveden House hotel in Berkshire, which featured Iberico ham, poulet de Bresse, white truffles, quails' eggs, semi-dried tomatoes and fermented sourdough bread, weighed half a kilogram, and cost £100.

Foraging – why all the attention?

Using foraged ingredients is nothing new but the trend has become more mainstream over the past two years. However, the wider use of foraged food in restaurants also carries a certain amount of danger.
