Acorn winners 2012 – Fritz Müller

Age 26

Position Event and group manager, London Marriott Hotel Grosvenor Square

Nominator Mark Thung

Proudest moment Winning the hotel's manager of the quarter award twice - in the first quarter 2009 and second quarter of 2012.

Greatest inspiration My father, because he came from a poor background but built up a good career for himself. He represents workers with the big unions in Germany and has to balance his skill sets. I want to match and improve on that. I have also had a lot of inspiration from the line managers and general managers I've worked with.

Ambition In the short term I'd like to be a general manager and in the long-term I'd like to own my own hotel.

Fritz Müller has had a meteoric rise since graduating from the Vocational School for Hotel Management, Munich. He joined Marriott Grosvenor Square in 2007 as front desk agent, but his flair saw him promoted five times in just five years through to his current role as events and groups manager.

His mettle was proved in 2011 when most of the events team had moved on. Until the team could be replaced, Fritz worked 60-hour weeks and brought in two-thirds of the revenue himself, personally upselling business worth more than £400,000. No wonder he was chosen to attend Marriott's 18-month management development programme, specialising in revenue management - an achievement limited to one candidate per property.
