Liverpool hotel occupancy soars thanks to MTV Awards

Hotels in Liverpool experienced a big boost in occupancy rates last week as the world’s pop stars descended on the European Capital of Culture for the MTV Europe music awards.

Occupancy at the city’s Radisson SAS hotel was 100% on the night of the awards, with Take That and the event’s presenter Katy Perry staying at the four-star property.

Meanwhile the Beatles-inspired Hard Days Night hotel was booked out by a corporate client with close links to MTV, resulting in the channel’s executives staying at the 110-room boutique hotel.

Liverpool’s Malmaison hosted many of the MTV performers with stars including Leona Lewis and the Sugababes staying at the hotel.

General manager Mark James told Caterer the hotel experienced unprecedented levels of paparazzi and fans. “We had to put up crowd barriers,” he said. “The event was a great success not just for the hotel but also the city and there was a real buzz.”

Liverpool has bucked the downturn trend in UK hotel occupancy, which has slipped 1.4% in the first nine months of 2008, according to business advisor Deloitte.

The city saw an average occupancy of 79.3% from January to September, the second highest in the country after London.
