Would you sign up to a voluntary menu labelling scheme? Should operators be tasked with taking responsibility for the health of the nation?

According to a recent study, consumers are looking to restaurants, pubs, cafes and caterers to provide more information on the food they are eating when out of the home  and with obesity rates in the UK still on the up Government health secretary Andrew Lansley is expected to call on operators to sign up to a voluntary food labelling scheme.

The World Menu Report by Unilever Food Solutions found that almost three quarters (73%) of consumers polled want to know more about what is in their food when eating out; 61% of respondents said they preferred to eat in places that are transparent about the ingredients they use; and 59% of those surveyed thought that knowing about the nutritional information would influence their choice of establishment – of these 75% said health was the reason.

But what do you, as operators, think about this? It's your industry; make your voice heard.
