Question
I am keen to develop my career in revenue/yield management. I have two internship offers from hotels, one in a sales department and the other in front office. What's the better bet for my career?
Answer
Lesley Reynolds, chief executive, Portfolio International
This really is a chicken-and-egg situation in that exposure in either area could lead to revenue/yield management. I suppose if I had to put my neck on the line, I would encourage you to take the sales option, with the caveat that you tell the director of sales or marketing that you want to head to revenue management, so you get exposed to the statistical analysis side if at all possible. I think it is vital that revenue management truly appreciates the front-line sales function and benefits from witnessing first-hand the negotiating and deal making - which one experiences less of in front office.
