Sun and football boost sales at Young’s pubs

The sunny summer and the World Cup have enabled Young’s managed pubs to kick off the new financial year with an 11% rise in sales.

Chief executive Stephen Goodyear said the group was able to make the most of the summer weather because most of its estate had “substantial outside areas”.

In addition, many pubs benefited from the World Cup matches, especially when England was playing.

Since the start of the current financial year in May, the group has acquired eight pubs and is in discussions for five more, which will bring its portfolio to 221 managed and tenanted outlets.

Goodyear said the group was making good progress in merging its brewing and wholesaling activities with those of Bedfordshire-based Charles Wells to create the joint-venture Wells & Young’s Brewing Company.

He added that Young’s was in advanced negotiations to sell its Ram brewery and associated offices in Wandsworth.
