Compass to increase apprenticeship places to 1,600

Compass Group has pledged to increase the number of apprenticeship places it offers to its employees to 1,600 in 2011/2012.

The food service giant has demonstrated its commitment to apprenticeship training in recent years by putting up the number of places it offers year on year. In 2009/2010, 750 employees completed an apprenticeship; in 2010/2011, the number rose to 950.

Apprenticeships are open to all site-based employees including assistants, chefs, supervisors and managers. They cover a range of subjects, including professional cookery, hospitality supervision, leadership and management as well as role-specific subjects including cleaning, portering, business services and food and beverage.

The most recent apprenticeship to be added to the qualifications portfolio is facilities management, which was completed by the first 10 applicants in September 2010.

Vicky Williams, HR director, resourcing & development at Compass Group UK & Ireland, said that investing in people was incredibly important in the service industry.

"We believe in nurturing talent within the company, providing experience and formal qualifications to create managers and leaders of the future."

Mayor of London Boris Johnson announced his target to reach 20,000 apprentices this year and 13 of Compass's apprentices joined him at City Hall last week to celebrate the commitment to the scheme (pictured).
