Diwali, or the Festival of Lights, is probably the best known of India's festivals. It is celebrated by Hindus all over the world as the beginning of the new year when, traditionally, people wear new clothes and share sweets.
Like many Indian festivals, Diwali signifies different things to different people across the country. In the north, it celebrates Rama's homecoming to Ayodhya after the defeat of Ravana, and his coronation as king; in Gujarat, the festival honours Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth; while Bengalis associate the day with the goddess Kali.
Overall, Diwali (12 November) celebrates the renewal of life and heralds the approach of winter, so it's a perfect excuse for a curry by candlelight.
