Almost 75% of Brits plan to holiday in UK next year

The domestic tourism boom looks set to continue next year

Almost three-quarters of UK consumers plan to take a holiday in England next year, research has revealed.

In the TNS poll of more than 1,000 UK residents, commissioned by tourist board VisitEngland, 72% said they are likely to take a break in England in 2010.

The overwhelming majority of respondents (95%) who took a break in England this year said they are likely to return next year.

While many 2009 visitors (80%) visited in 2008, one in five returned after at least a year’s gap, the survey revealed.

The research follows the July 2009 results from the UK Tourism Survey (UKTS) which revealed that the number of holiday trips taken by UK residents within England were up by 40% in comparison to July 2008; amounting to almost 2m more holiday trips taken.

James Berresford, chief executive of VisitEngland, said the research provides evidence that the domestic tourism boom seen this summer was not a flash in the pan.

“The research further confirms and highlights that the great England holiday is here to stay,” he said. “I’m delighted that so many people have been enjoying holidaying in England and also that so many are intending to take an England break next year.”
