Charlton House Hotel and Spa, the 26-bedroom, four-AA-red-star country house property in Shepton Mallet, Somerset, has been put on the market for £3.5m after its parent company went into administration in June.
Dating back to 1630, the property was bought and refurbished by Roger and Monty Saul, the founders of the Mulberry Design Company in 1996. Their aim was to present the products of the Mulberry Home Collection to the outside world in a country house environment.
The hotel has been extended in recent years and now includes a 60-cover, two-AA-rosette restaurant, conference facilities for 100 people in the Orangery, a helicopter landing pad in the four acre grounds and a spa with five treatment rooms. The restaurant held a Michelin star between 1998 and 2005.
Marketing the property on behalf of the administrators BDO LLP, Christie + Co said the hotel offers a tremendous future potential, subject to further investment.
“This is a unique opportunity to acquire a Grade II listed classic manor house hotel and spa with an award winning reputation, which we expect to generate a high level of enquiries form national, regional and local operators,” said Simon Stevens, director at Christie + Co.
