North star - Missoni and Rezidor open new Edinburgh hotel

Italian designer Missoni has teamed up with hotel group Rezidor to create a snazzy set of properties across the globe - and it's first stop Edinburgh.

It's time to enjoy the gorgeous style at the new Missoni hotel in Edinburgh - wavy black-and-white patterns characteristic of the Italian brand, matched with curvaceous gold stone. Knitwear designer Rosita Missoni (shown below with Rezidor president and CEO Kurt Ritter) has splashed the signature wavy patterns across the hotel's cushions, dressing gowns and two large urns in the lobby.

The place should shake up the beautiful but sometimes grey Scottish city, too - yes, we know it's a recession, but everyone needs a bit of light relief from time to time. Plus, all the best businesses are launched during a downturn - or at least isn't that how the wisdom goes?

Whatever the immediate logic, Missoni is at least treading a path a few high-profile designers have taken before - the Armani and Bulgari outfits in Dubai and Bali, for example. It has joined forces for the new project with Rezidor, a company that has more than 350 hotels around the world, including Radisson SAS and Park Inn hotels.

Next up for the joint venture is Kuwait, planned for the end of the year, then a hotel Missoni with the appendage "Jebel Sifah" in Oman in 2012.

Using foraged ingredients is nothing new but the trend has become more mainstream over the past two years. However, the wider use of foraged food in restaurants also carries a certain amount of danger.
