Nearly one-in-three people support a smoking ban in enclosed public places, according to the latest survey from the Office for National Statistics.
Research also found support for smoking restrictions had increased steadily between 1996 and 2004 in general.
Overall, 30% of non-smokers said they’d visit pubs more often if smoking was restricted, while and only 12% of smokers would stay away.
Support for restrictions on smoking in restaurants has also increased, from 85% in 1996 to 91% by 2004.
Just 5% of those surveyed believed there should be no smoking restrictions at all, and more than half of the people surveyed (51%) in work said smoking was already banned at their premises.
