Hiring in hospitality industry slows

Demand for jobs in hospitality has fallen over the last month, according to the Monster Employment Index for Europe.

The index – independently audited by US-based ARC Research – dropped five points in August showing online job availability in general has slowed across Europe.

Of all the sectors analysed, job demand in hospitality and tourism showed the biggest decrease with the index dropping 19 points.

The “seasonal dip” in August, driven by a slowing up of hiring in hospitality, affected most of Europe and the Southern countries in particular.

Alan Townsend, chief operating officer of Monster UK & Ireland, said: “Since the beginning of the year we’ve seen a significant overall rise in online recruiting activity and the fall in August represents a seasonal dip as hiring for the hospitality industry slowed.”

But growth through the first half of the year had outstripped that of last year, he added indicating that job creation remained high.
