Canteen to open six-month pop-up restaurant at Covent Garden market

British restaurant group Canteen is opening a six-month pop-up restaurant at Covent Garden in London.

The group, which currently runs four restaurants in the capital, is launching the temporary site on Thursday (15 September), situated in the glass-covered market building, among its many craft stalls and shops.

Canteen Covent Garden, which will operate on a no-reservations policy, will serve an all-day menu of seasonal British food with set menus at lunch and dinner. Dishes will include pressed smoked ham hock, piccalilli and toast; fish and chips; and pie and mash.

In the run-up to Christmas, Canteen Covent Garden will host a series of guest chefs taking over the space, while special events will be held during the autumn celebrating London Fashion Week, the London Design Festival, the Frieze Art Fair and the London Restaurant Festival.

Earlier this year, Canteen revealed plans to expand its business across London and grow up to 15 sites in the next five years.

It is looking at locations in high-profile areas in the capital and aims to extend its offer to include A1 sites offering its menu of classic British food as take-away over the counter.

Canteen was founded by Patrick Clayton-Malone, Cass Titcombe and Dominic Lake in 2005 when the group launched its first site in Spitalfields. A second restaurant at the Royal Festival Hall at London's South Bank followed in 2007 and further sites in Baker Street and Canary Wharf opened in 2009.

Titcombe has since left the group, which has appointed former Swan Collection chef Richard Edney as its new executive head chef. Former Gordon Ramsay Holdings and Swan Collection chef Mark Sargeant has come on board as a consultant.
