Philip Howard’s new Kitchen W8 gets the thumbs up from critic

Three new London eateries receive the seal of approval from the capital’s restaurant critics, this week.

Kitchen W8, a new informal offering from chef Philip Howard, best known for his two-Michelin starred restaurant the Square, gets the thumbs up from Richard Vines of Bloomberg.  With Howard still based behind the stove at the Square, the kitchen at Kitchen W8 is headed by Mark Kempson, formerly of the Vineyard at Stockcross, Berkshire.

Vines is particularly taken by a starter dish of game consommé with bacon cream, served with a game hot dog.  “I’m not sure where I last had so much pleasure for £8,” he enthuses.

Meanwhile, Fay Maschler of the Evening Standard is delighted that the owners of the Japanese restaurant Atami have relaunched it as Made in China.  After enjoying dim sum and a  selection of chef’s recommended dishes, she says she is happy to add Made in China to her short list of places to go when longing for Chinese food.

In Time Out, Guy Dimond says Barrica more than holds his own as the latest Spanish restaurant to open in Goodge Street, an area where Fino and Salt Yard provide stiff competition.

He highly recommends the new Iberian eaterie for its carefully chosen all-Spanish wine list, with an emphasis on food-friendly styles including dry fino and manzanilla sherries, and a classic tapas menu.
