A four-yearly congress of heart surgeons this September allowed Vienna to achieve the highest hikes in occupancy, room rate and revenue per available room (revpar) of the 10 European cities listed in the monthly Europe HotStats survey from TRI Hospitality.

The influx of more than 25,000 cardiologists into the Austrian capital allowed hoteliers to charge premium rates. Occupancy, room rate and revpar rose by 4.7 points and 31% and 38.2% respectively to boost overall profitability by a massive 67.8%.

Nevertheless, Moscow remained the most profitable city for hotels, despite a year-on-year fall in income before fixed charges per available room (IBFCpar) to €195.87 – a figure that still topped the table.

The Russian capital achieved this on the back of a 20.6% rise in average room rate to €229.87 (the second highest in the survey after Paris) and despite a 3.5 percentage point drop in occupancy and a near doubling in payroll costs as a percentage of turnover from 9.1% to 16%, which was still the lowest in the survey.

Paris and London were the next most profitable cities, while the biggest growth in IBFCpar after Vienna was seen in Berlin and Amsterdam, which enjoyed rises of 16.7% and 15.8% respectively.

The figures are compiled each month by Tri Hospitality Consulting.
