Celebrity Northumberland pub sold for £300,000

A remote Northumberland pub, reputedly frequented by musicians such as Fat Boy Slim and Dire Straits singer Mark Knopfler has been sold for around £300,000.

Acting on behalf of Law of Property Act Receivers, Christie + Co sold the freehold of the Carts Bog Inn in Langley on Tyne near Hexham to local John Davison for an undisclosed sum, althouth offers in excess of £300,000 were sought.

The pub, which dates back to the 1700s includes a main bar and a 50-cover restaurant.

Prince William was also reported to have had Sunday lunch in the Northumberland inn, after making a surprise visit to a local hunt ball in 2003.

Mark Worley, associate director of Christie + Co, said: “We are delighted to have sold this well known and historic public house/restaurant. The business had been suffering through lack of trade for some time prior to its closure last summer and a succession of break-ins, neglect and vandalism had left the interior of the building in very poor condition. Despite this there was significant interest in the pub with eight offers received.

“John Davison has bought the pub for his son and daughter-in-law, who plan a major refurbishment and re-launch. I would ask that the people of Hexham and the surrounding villages give John and his family as much support as possible and visit the pub once it has reopened.”
