Plans to open 20-plus Yotels in next two years

Yotel, the Japanese-pod style hotel chain, has revealed plans to expand across at least 20 airport and city centre locations in the next two years.

Gerard Greene, chief executive of Yotel, said that the group was already in negotiations with airports across all continents.

“We’re already targeting every major airport in the world,” he told Caterersearch.

“We want to be in the top six airports in Europe, America and Asia. The Europe deals are pretty much sewn up now as it was easier to start there. Deals in Asia take more investment and management time.”

Yotel, backed by Kuwait-based investment company IFA Hotels and resorts, is looking at London, New York, Paris, Amsterdam, Miami, Chicago, Los Angeles and India, at mostly airport locations but also some city centre ones.

The hotels will vary in size to the ones pioneered at Gatwick and Heathrow airport, with some being even smaller than the existing model.

Yotel, founded by Greene and Yo Sushi founder Simon Woodroffe,  launched its first 46-cabin hotel inside Gatwick airport’s South terminal in June last year, followed by a 32-cabin second site launch at Heathrow in December. It is extending the Gatwick property by a further two units.

The cabins are aimed at business travellers stopping over between flights, or in case of delay, and are bookable for a minimum of four hours or for overnight stay.
