SBPA welcomes Glasgow U-turn on toilet-based capacity limits in pubs

Number of loos will not act as a limit on customer numbers in Glasgow

The Scottish Beer and Pub Association (SBPA), has welcomed Glasgow Council’s change of heart regarding ‘capacity limits’ in pubs and bars based on the numbers of toilets available.

The City of Glasgow’s Licensing Board had been set to impose capacity limits for hospitality operations based on the number of toilets on the premises, but following inquiries from the SBPA, the council has now admitted it does not plan to impose this restriction.

Patrick Browne, chief executive of the SBPA, welcomed the move.

“We are hopeful that the recent commitments made by the Glasgow Licensing Board will positively resolve an issue which has caused a good deal of uncertainty amongst the licensed industry in Glasgow,” he said.

The original plans could have cost operators in the city millions of pounds by forcing them to make major alterations to their premises or to trade with significantly reduced numbers of customers allowed on site.

Browne added: “We would hope that other Boards which have sought to pursue a similar approach on 'sanitary provision' acknowledge the Glasgow Board's change of stance on this issue and change their positions accordingly.”

SBPA's members operate around 160 licensed premises within the area of the Glasgow Licensing Board and operate 1,500 of Scotland's 5,200 pubs.
