Chefs from London’s historic Indian restaurant Veeraswamy have been invited to cook at Buckingham Palace this evening to prepare canapés for a celebration of Britain’s Indian community.

The event, hosted by the Queen, will be attended by leading members of the Indian community and marks the forthcoming state visit of India’s President, Pratibha Devisingh Patil, as well as the impending Diwali and Indian New Year celebrations this weekend.

The two Veeraswamy chefs will be working alongside Buckingham Palace’s royal chef Mark Flanangan and his team and will prepare tofu salad rolls, paneer croquets and almond chicken tikka for 350 leading British Indians, as well as representatives from the Indian High Commission in London and members of the royal family.

The guest list will include Namita Panjabi and Ranjit Mathrani, whose Masala World company owns Veeraswamy as well as two more upmarket London restaurants (the Michelin-starred Amaya and Chutney Mary) and the Masala Zone chain of mid-market restaurants..

Veeraswamy, located in Soho, was founded in 1926 – the same year the Queen was born - and claims to be “the oldest Indian restaurant in the British Isles”.
