Foodservice company Charlton House has renewed calls for contract caterers to ban cod from their menus in a bid to save stocks.

David Cavalier, food innovation director for Charlton House, called for a concerted effort to protect dwindling cod levels.

“We knew that taking cod off our menus was not going to have a great impact on the current stock levels, but we had hoped that our larger competitors would follow suit, which would have made a big difference.

“The very nature of our business means that we have to take great care to ensure that we have as little impact on the environment as possible," he added.

According to the British Hospitality Association the business and industry sector of the UK foodservice industry served 645 million meals last year alone.

Charlton House, which serves an average of 9 million meals each year, removed cod from its menus in March 2005. It provides staff catering services to 135 UK organisations, including T-Mobile and the National Assembly for Wales.
